Have you ever participated in a political protest? Once in college some students were traveling to a part of Georgia to protest a white supremacists’ rally. I was too scared to go…. If they’re gonna go through the trouble of having a rally about how they don’t like Blacks (and others, I’m sure) then why would I go? I don’t like physical danger……
Today (as another day last week) some people are outside protesting. As I’m sitting at my computer busily working (I’m in the middle of an album fest!), I hear voices raised. Then more voices. And now everyone seems to be yelling.
I live not too far from the UN and there are lots of consulates in the neighborhood, and on my street. The police came, put up barriers, then created an entire space across the street for the protesters to safely protest while allowing traffic to pass. But the people are yelling, apparently, at another, smaller group of people. And some people behind the barrier are swinging and trying to get past the police officers. (And for the record, so far, it has never occurred to me to swing my hands and fists a few feet away from a police officer. What?!) But at this point, no one has thrown any punches.
Last week it wasn’t so peaceful. People actually started beating up one another. Then finally, one man was on the ground surrounded by a few others who were kicking and punching him.
Why do people do that? Why are there white supremacists? Why are people kicking a man who’s lying on the ground? What?!
Well, to put it bluntly but not at all lightly, it’s called sin. People are inclined to do what they ought not to do.
I took a few shots.
