Wendy Battles for Burundi……

I’m right now battling for the nation of Burundi through prayer. In July I’ll have the privilege of going there with my church. Below is the letter that I sent out via email to those who know me.

Hi Everyone!
All of you are connected to me somehow — family, friends, clients, colleagues…. you know who you are to me!

Most of you also know that I’ll be going to Burundi this summer, July 3-16th, for a missions trip with my church, Times Square Church. I’m writing asking for prayer and financial support.

Now I’ll give you some background about Burundi and why I want to go there. Burundi is a small country in central Africa that had been a colony of Belgium until 1962. For generations there had been prejudice, tension, resulting in multiple civil wars and even two genocides between the minority Tutsis and the majority Hutus. Because of this simmering rivalry, there sparked another genocide in the 1990’s which spilled over into other neighboring countries like Zaire and Rwanda. After the genocide subsided, a democratically elected president, Pierre Nkurunziza, began forming a government that is made up of both Hutus and Tootsis. Later this autumn the UN will remove it’s last remaining peacekeeping presence from the country; however, there are many people who hope to resume the violence once the UN pulls out. My church has been praying for Burundi since early 2006 and we believe that a supernatural intervention from God is the only thing that will put this violent rivalry away and allow the country to heal and to be restored.

We’ll be there for about ten days doing all sorts of missions work. I’m really excited! I’ll be on the Medical Team. There will be other teams going into the prisons, into hospitals, to visit orphans, and to minister to “street kids” (orphaned and homeless due to the genocide and/or AIDS). Simultaneously there will also be a pastors’ conference, a womens’ conference, and open air meetings telling those in attendance about the love of Christ. In fact, that’s really what this trip is all about — to convey the love of Christ to the people of Burundi through our words and acts of love. We go believing that supernatural forgiveness and healing are the only legitimate weapons against repeated bloodshed in the name of tribal and ethnic distrust.

After I graduated from college instead of going immediately to medical school, I went to Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of Congo) for six months. I went to see if I really wanted to be a missionary someday and I decided that I did! I’ve been on other short-term trips before but going to Burundi will be the most awesome experience of my life so far. Just to have the opportunity to give some of what God has given me (love, forgiveness, and joy) will be tremendous. Burundi’s recent history of neighbor-against-neighbor violence has made forgiveness and hope elusive for individuals. Hopelessness, depression, despair, and even violence can seem more real than hope. But there is hope! In Jesus Christ there is hope for lasting forgiveness and restoration no matter what you’ve seen or done or how you’ve been victimized. I’m really excited about this! I do believe that this is a critical time for Burundi and for the world.

Please pray for:
1 - Burundi’s restoration,
2 - The unity and effectiveness of our team, and
3 - For me to do all that I am called to do

04.16.07 saige princess: Fearfully, Wonderfully

“Fearfully, Wonderfully” is my portrait collection which extends from pregnancy to the baby’s first birthday. So I had the pleasure of photographing little Saige who recently turned one year old. We started this photographic series with her parents before she was even born. It hardly seems possible that she has grown so quickly and so nicely as this. She’s very sweet and smart and expressive…… what every parent hopes and prays for. Happy birthday Saige!

Congratulations Karleen and Cliff!

Surrounded by friends from Times Square Church for lunch on Easter Sunday, Karleen received quite a nice surprise. Her beloved Cliff asked her to marry him! How sweet! She was really surprised too! Made extra special because it was Resurrection Sunday….

Wedding Photography Advice Number One

Before I get into the nuts and bolts of your wedding day and how it can flow photographically, I must start with the basics. In my honest opinion, wedding photography and shoes have a lot in common. “Buy the best that you can afford”. Pause and think about why you hire a wedding photographer in the first place. What is it that you want? Are you mainly concerned with what sort of imagery you get for your money? Or are you mainly concerned with how many items you get for your money? Those of you who have talked with me know that my packages are two-fold. There is a Creative Fee to hire me. And there is a Product Credit used to purchase items. Even though it’s all within the package, I make the distinction because if you’re hiring me, you’re hiring my eye. My eye, my creativity, my time, and my presence on your wedding day are what you want. Using your Product Credit you can purchase whatever items you want. Albums, canvas prints, enlargements, thank you cards, etc are always available. I prefer to place the emphasis on the photography because that’s only available once. I hope I don’t sound too stern here! I just like to be clear and transparent for the sake of potential clients and photographers who read my Blog.

Hold Very Still

This photo tip is so fundamental, I skipped right over it! Make sure that you hold your body, your hands, your camera very still when you take a photograph. Whether you’re using a “point-n-shoot” or a vintage film camera or the latest digital SLR YOU MUST KEEP STILL! So many images are out of focus because of camera-shake, ie the camera was ever so slightly in motion. Holding the camera with both hands (no more of this one-handed stuff!), place your left hand under the camera to support it, and use your right hand index finger to press the shutter-release. It may even help if you take a deep breath, exhale, and then press the shutter-release. I don’t care what kind of camera you have. Some of you have seen me do this even with my little point-n-shoot–because whatever I’m photographing, I mean it. I want to give that image the best chance possible of looking great. So I start out by eliminating camera-shake. I suggest you do the same. Have fun! Photograph!

04.02.07 paige and ned

Paige and Ned moved to San Francisco last year but I was their photographer for their wedding this past January at the The Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Since we didn’t do an Engagement Session, we had a Newlywed Session in San Francisco! It was really cool seeing them out on the West Coast. I have started doing portrait sessions in the home, in people’s familiar setting, so this was perfect. Paige and Ned had a beautiful, sunny apartment near the Golden Gate Park and the beach. So we incorporated everything for this session. Ned especially had lots of creative ideas. So here are a few images from that day!
